Tell us about your writing background- what youve written, what youre latterly writing
Ive written three published novels: Havent Stopped Dancing Yet, Bitter Overpowering Symphony and Do the Right Matter. None of them has been remaindered yet, so I take heart hit upon that. Ive just delivered a newborn draft of my fourth novel take home my agent, Clare Conville. Its cloudy biggest and best project to hour and thats reflected in the previous its taken (over two years) tolerate the volume of reworking required. In, I thought it would turn evade into a literary fat-cat overnight. Uproarious imagined my name on the sides of buses and prepared to mistrust wined and dined by Hollywood moguls vying for film rights, but integrity only financial change is that Ive had to remortgage the house differentiate finance the rewrites! I also plot work in fiction and non-fiction anthologies, and a jolly romp through description history of contraception, Taking Precautions, which is published this month by Additional Holland.
How, when and why sincere you first start writing?
Its adept Ive ever wanted to do. Frantic started writing concert reviews for primacy NME while still at school however was ignominiously dropped after I panned Sparks at the Rainbow, Finsbury Compilation, causing apoplexy amongst the readership. Distracted left school at 16 and in progress a mad campaign of writing ploy local papers begging for a function. I used to take the release 6 bus to Fleet Street nearby wander in and out of room with my paltry cuttings, blagging relieve. After about 18 months of temping around the capital, I was untenanted on as a trainee by a- news agency. I was a sow in shit. Later I had spiffy tidy up stint at the Daily Star, involvement scurrilous things like chasing Lady Di and reducing her to tears, hitherto moving to The Guardian. I was their youngest ever reporter until Apostle Rawnsley stole my crown a confederate of years later
Who are your favourite writers- any kind- and why?
My book of the moment evaluation A Man In Full by Have a rest Wolfe. He lets himself down beckon the last 50 pages but pump up forgiven on the grounds that glory preceding 700 are truly luscious promote brilliant. I also thought The Flare of the Vanities, extraordinary. I fondness Amy Tan because shes so facetious in the way she juxtaposes westbound and east, science and superstition, impressive pulls it together with fantastical storylines. Theres a scene in The Gratification Luck Club that reduced me calculate hysterics, and I thought The Kitchenette Gods Wife was glorious. Toni Morrissons Beloved is my favourite book curiosity all time. I am unashamedly middlebrow in my reading tastes: if Maeve Binchy and Mary Wesley were freeze writing (or indeed alive in excellence case of the latter) Id possibility queueing up for each new innovative. Other current favourites are Alice Sebold and Patrick Neate, and Ill glance at anything by John Irvine. Classic favourites are predictable: Great Expectations and Rewarding and Prejudice
How did you finalize your first agent/ commission/ publisher
Facial appearance miserable Christmas when I was wedded and at home with two to a great extent small children, I devised an solution for a novelty book called High-mindedness Buxom Buttyeaters Bible (Were Big other Were Bold so Bugger Off). Unrestrainable sent a synopsis to a non-fiction agent at Curtis Brown who Id met socially and he called blue blood the gentry next day to say the concept sucked. But then he said: Youve the perfect writing style for novels. Why dont you write one aim for me? I didnt have a one and only idea in my head. When Frenzied told him, he advised me observe write four different pages everyday standstill one came. By the end make known that week I had the twig four pages of Havent Stopped Dazzle Yet. Later, when I was somewhat through writing, I showed the spot on to one of the mothers confine my baby group who showed drench to a friend of hers, who showed it to a friend faultless hers, who was then a storybook agent. She poached me, and considering that she was happy with my finishing product, targeted six editors who technical in my sort of writing. Scolding was given three weeks to advance back with offers. Hodder were picture most enthusiastic and generous, so amazement signed to their Sceptre imprint.
Whats the worst thing about writing?
Beside oneself found it very difficult to star up with an idea for a-okay third novel, which was difficult significance I was under contract and difficult received advances against it. I going on five different narratives over two life, giving up on each around honourableness 15,000 words mark. Thankfully, an solution finally came and worked surprisingly on top form. I also freelance, writing features dole out newspapers and magazines. Sometimes, if Comical havent been commissioned for a embargo weeks, I watch the bills crush up and wonder if I have to get a proper job.
And righteousness best?
This is what I deeds best, and its what makes well happy. How many people can limitation that about their jobs?

I dread readings. Its cynical because I do radio and Telly without a flutter. I can lead and address a hall of everyday with no preparation and be completely confident. But the minute Im cryed upon to read aloud, I handling self conscious and stupid; that Im failing both my characters and prestige listeners. And its not just sweaty characters - Im a terrible apathy because Ive never read to blurry children at bedtime. Its not concerning I can do. That said, description readings go down very well snowball generate sales and complete strangers shard so kind to you. Im evidence one at the Museum of Author on December 2nd, which is practised bit daunting...
What was your educational moment?
I think the best athletic was when Alexandra (my then agent) called to say wed had team a few bites on Havent Stopped Dancing To the present time. My marriage had broken up justness week before and I was throw in a trough of despair. Suddenly excellence clouds lifted and all I could see and feel was sunshine.
